Bloody Bookaholic's Commandment:

Thou Shall Read Till Thy Eyes Bleed

The 5 Top Less Than Ideal (Downright Sucky) 2013 Covers, with Fantastic Story Summaries!

Recently I've read some fantastic book summaries. Very imaginative, intriguing, refreshing, etc. Most of the time though these summaries are accompanied by downright unpleasant covers! It's Insignia all over again (BTW the cover for the sequel to Insignia, Vortex, is out as well and oh gosh it's not great, but really who cares when a great story lies underneath? The cover for Vortex is at the end of this post).

Here I've compiled a list for you guys. Keep your eye out for these books, because they sound downright like a good read about to happen.

All Our Yesterdays
Marina has everything. She’s got money, popularity, and a bright future. Plus, she’s best friends with the boy next door, who happens to be a gorgeous prodigy from one of America’s most famous families.
Em has nothing. Imprisoned in a small white cell in the heart of a secret military base, all she has is the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain.
But Marina and Em have one big thing in common: they’re the same person.
Now Em must travel back four years in time in order to avert the terrible future from which she’s fled, and there’s only one way to do it. She must kill the person who invented the time machine in the first place: someone from her past. A person she loved.
But Marina won’t let them go without a fight.
I love going back in time! It sounds complicated, all "Back to the future", and screwed up. A great read about to happen!!

But that cover? Ugh, it's not the worst, true, but it is definitely not the best. I do like the shattered effect, but not the color yellow... I don't know, it just doesn't come together for me.

 In the After
They hear the most silent of footsteps.
They are faster than anything you've ever seen.
And They won't stop chasing you...until you are dead.
Amy is watching TV when it happens, when the world is attacked by Them. These vile creatures are rapidly devouring mankind. Most of the population is overtaken, but Amy manages to escape—and even rescue “Baby,” a toddler left behind in the chaos. Marooned in Amy’s house, the girls do everything they can to survive—and avoid Them at all costs.
After years of hiding, they are miraculously rescued and taken to New Hope, a colony of survivors living in a former government research compound. While at first the colony seems like a dream with plenty of food, safety, and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals that it is far from ideal. And Amy soon realizes that unless things change, she’ll lose Baby—and much more.
Rebellious, courageous, and tender, this unforgettable duo will have you on the edge of your seat as you tear through the pulse-pounding narrow escapes and horrifying twists of fate in this thrilling debut from author Demitria Lunetta.

A tale of two girls, taking care of each other like sisters, trying to survive an unforgiving world. You had me at hello.

The cover though...

The Lost Sun (The United States of Asgard, #1)
Goodreads
Seventeen-year-old Soren Bearskin is trying to escape the past. His father, a famed warrior, lost himself to the battle-frenzy and killed thirteen innocent people. Soren cannot deny that berserking is in his blood--the fevers, insomnia, and occasional feelings of uncontrollable rage haunt him. So he tries to remain calm and detached from everyone at Sanctus Sigurd's Academy. But that's hard to do when a popular, beautiful girl like Astrid Glyn tells Soren she dreams of him. That's not all Astrid dreams of--the daughter of a renowned prophetess, Astrid is coming into her own inherited abilities.
When Baldur, son of Odin and one of the most popular gods in the country, goes missing, Astrid sees where he is and convinces Soren to join her on a road trip that will take them to find not only a lost god, but also who they are beyond the legacy of their parents and everything they've been told they have to be.
Crazy Gods always being crazy. Anger issues, prophetess to be, together on a wild adventure. Give it to me now!!

Of course, cover wise...

The End Games
Goodreads
It happened on Halloween.
The world ended.
And a dangerous Game brought it back to life.
Seventeen-year-old Michael and his five-year-old brother, Patrick, have been battling monsters in The Game for weeks.
In the rural mountains of West Virginia, armed with only their rifle and their love for each other, the brothers follow Instructions from the mysterious Game Master. They spend their days searching for survivors, their nights fighting endless hordes of “Bellows”—creatures that roam the dark, roaring for flesh. And at this Game, Michael and Patrick are very good.
But The Game is changing.
The Bellows are evolving.
The Game Master is leading Michael and Patrick to other survivors—survivors who don’t play by the rules.
And the brothers will never be the same.
...and I just lost the game. Anyways, the story sounds like fun! Let the games begin.

This cover, however, may be the worst one yet.

The 5th Wave (The Fifth Wave, #1)
Goodreads
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see.
Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
So many waves man, sounds intriguing. Waves of what? The cover is fine, but leaves a lot to be desired.

I hope you guys added most, if not all, of these titles into your respective wishlists. They seem like great titles! You just gotta to look past the horrible covers =D

The Vortex cover:

Vortex (Insignia, #2)

1 comment:

  1. I actually like the cover for The End Games. lol Well, the top half. I don't care for the people walking on the bottom. I don't mind the cover for The 5th Wave either, but not a fan of the Vortex cover.
