Hot Cover Reveal: Up From the Grave (The Night Huntress Series #7) by Jeaniene Frost

Up From the Grave (Night Huntress, #7)

There’s always one more grave to dig.
Lately, life has been unnaturally calm for vampires Cat Crawfield and her husband Bones. They should have known better than to relax their guard, because a shocking revelation sends them back into action to stop an all-out war…
A rogue CIA agent is involved in horrifying secret activities that threaten to raise tensions between humans and the undead to dangerous heights. Now Cat and Bones are in a race against time to save their friends from a fate worse than death…because the more secrets they unravel, the deadlier the consequences. And if they fail, their lives—and those of everyone they hold dear— will be hovering on the edge of the grave.
I feel like I've been waiting FOREVER to read this novel. After reading Twice Tempted I am even MORE excited!! Vlad is something else, but he has got NOTHING on Bones... Grr... And I miss Cat, and the gang.   Now, the cover... it looks kick ass, and sexy, but it doesn't look like the other covers :(  It still looks good though, just not what I've come to expect.

Chaz Reviews: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1)
Title: Ender's Game
Author: Orson Scott Card
Series: Ender's Saga
Book #: 1
Pages: 324
Reading Level: YA
Book Rating: Photobucket
Goodreads Rating: 4.27
Published: July 15th, 1994.

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.
Ender's Game is the winner of the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Chaz's POV:

Here is a tricky review for me. It's sort of bittersweet. Let me explain....

I have heard of this book for YEARS (and no wonder since it was written before I was born...1977) by way of recommendation, Amazon.com's "you might like", magazines, reviews, friends, etc. So of course the hype was huge. I merely went to B&N to browse books as usual and found this for the first time since I've never seen it on the shelves. For 6$ it was a bargain and It's reputation was solid. Good $ and a good cover as always draw me in as well.

The book starts out, as all do, with intros, back-stories, and trying to introduce the key characters VERY early (or so I thought). We meet Andrew “Ender” Wiggins, his sister Valentine, and brother Peter just to start. The dynamic right of the bat of these 3 is incredibly mature, scary, and a tad bit psychotic even. Not what you would expect from three children who are all under the age of 10… lol. All of the trials and tribulations Ender faces are with kids his age, except everyone is a genius who will make you feel stupid at times. -_-

Through the first two chapters you discover the setting and course the book will take, but not completely described. This in particular I LOVED because being written in the first, and sometimes second person, one really doesn't get a direct explanation like almost every book written in third.
If felt a little like slow read sometimes but it really wasn’t. Ender deals with personal and “professional” issues that make him literally start to go crazy and moves the book along nicely but subtly. The vocabulary, situations, and abuse in the battle school make you CONSTANTLY forget your reading about children!!! It’s a unique experience I haven’t had in any story I’ve read EVER!
The ending was my favorite part by far!! The angles and confusion the author takes during the last chapters differ from the book almost entirely! For you out of the box thinkers (like me ;P), you will realize what’s happening almost instantly, but it will still leave your jaw dropped!! I thoroughly enjoyed the way it ended and how the characters’ stories don't end. Leaves you hanging a bit.

Bottom line, this is a solid book I would read between another series you might be waiting for or just to take a break from another story. I really liked it, but the spark of love just wasn't there for me.You can probably tell from the feel of the review.... hehehe

Sophmore Cover Revealed: Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J Maas AND Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdom #2) by Morgan Rhodes, Michelle Rowen

It has been an exciting week for cover reveals! The Iron Traitor by Julie Kagawa was revealed, and now Crown of Midnight and Rebel Spring. I haven't read Falling Kingdom yet, it's in my MUST READ list, but I did read Throne of Glass and loved it so I am excited beyond belief for the second book to come out (rumor has it Sarah J Maas will be at BEA -Book Expo America- this year, maybe with Crown of Midnight!

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)

An assassin’s loyalties are always in doubt.

But her heart never wavers.

After a year of hard labor in the Salt Mines of Endovier, eighteen-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien has won the king's contest to become the new royal assassin. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown – a secret she hides from even her most intimate confidantes.
Keeping up the deadly charade—while pretending to do the king's bidding—will test her in frightening new ways, especially when she's given a task that could jeopardize everything she's come to care for. And there are far more dangerous forces gathering on the horizon -- forces that threaten to destroy her entire world, and will surely force Celaena to make a choice.
Where do the assassin’s loyalties lie, and who is she most willing to fight for?

I love the art of this cover, it looks pretty kick ass. The only thing that I am not happy with is that it doesn't really go with the first cover...

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)

The first cover appealed more to girls, true, and the new cover looks to be wanting to appeal to a broader audience (which is always great!) I just wished they thought about it at the beginning. Now my covers don't match :(

Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms #2)

Rebel Spring on the other hand gets it. It is a pretty cool cover that will appeal to a broad audience, and it still maintains the spirit of the first cover. Like as soon as I say the RS cover I knew what series it belonged to.

Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1)

Chaz Reviews Debut: The Paladin Prophecy by Mark Frost

The Paladin Prophecy (The Paladin Prophecy, #1)
Title: The Paladin Prophecy
Author: Mark Frost
Series: The Paladin Prophecy
Book #: 1
Pages:560
Reading Level: YA
Book Rating: Photobucket
Goodreads Rating: 4.08
Published: Sept. 25th, 2012

Will West is careful to live life under the radar. At his parents' insistence, he's made sure to get mediocre grades and to stay in the middle of the pack on his cross-country team. Then Will slips up, accidentally scoring off the charts on a nationwide exam.

Now Will is being courted by an exclusive prep school . . . and is being followed by men driving black sedans. When Will suddenly loses his parents, he must flee to the school. There he begins to explore all that he's capable of--physical and mental feats that should be impossible--and learns that his abilities are connected to a struggle between titanic forces that has lasted for millennia.

Co-creator of the groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks, Mark Frost brings his unique vision to this sophisticated adventure, which combines mystery, heart-pounding action, and the supernatural.

Chaz's POV:

WOW! Have to start with that one word.

There are some books that you love but wish had more unpredictability. Then exists some that leave you dumbfounded with great story but you don't necessarily love it. Rarely does a book come along that does BOTH! I would like to state, after saying it does both, that this book is meant to be ENJOYED and not ANALYSED. I’ve read some reviews that are WAY over critical like if this was a Harvard Law paper. Jeez people, just enjoy what the author wants to present!!!!!

I have to say I judged this book by the cover when I walked into B&N. It really draws you in and I appreciate the thought that goes into a well-made jacket. I ordered it instantly to my Kindle and it was all down hill from there!

The book starts with a completely "ordinary" teen named Will West. But the beauty of how the author engages you right from the start is incredible. The action begins FAST! Will is drawn into such a complex series of events from the very beginning and one doesn't have to suffer a couple chapters of endless character background history and storytelling!! The author works that in all during the book that gives the reader those “oooohhhhh” moments (which everyone enjoys, right?).
The characters introduced (and pay attention when you read cause they are MANY) have comprehensive backgrounds and depth to them and the perfect lingo that goes with the personality of each. Nobody is just a side guy or a stand in. Will, Nando, Nick (who is my favorite and everyone will see why!!), Brooke, Ajay, Elise, and Ronnie won’t fail to amaze! Not to mention the plethora of others!

Mark Frost has a plot that doesn’t disappoint. He merges history and fantasy to the point where it can sound believable at times. Hehehe. The classic Good vs. Bad is there of course. You can value how he leads it in to the story slowly. Leaves one wondering who’s who with a few of the key characters. Also they way the story is layered and moves keeps it rolling high from start to end. It isn’t a slow read so it makes it easier to get through.

The ending will have you craving the next book, which is entirely the point of course! If your one of those people who reads the last page or last paragraph first, DON'T!!!!! Trust me it will destroy the story for you!!!!!!

I’m going to leave it here. I’m not one to explain a books story and spoil the contents.

READ IT!!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!! THAT my friend, is the bottom line. ;)

**Taschima's Note: Hi guys! I finally found my guest reviewer! Chaz is a dear old friend of mine who just LOVES reading as much as I do (you should have seen us when we bought Harry Potter books together at midnight releases... crazy). You can trust that he will write nothing but fair and honest reviews.

Anyways, I hope you welcome him with open arms. is not not that often we get a guy's POV when it comes to books so this should be SUPER interesting!

Review: Requiem (Delirium #3) by Lauren Oliver

Requiem (Delirium, #3)
Title: Requiem
Author: Lauren Oliver
Series: Delirium
Book #: 3
Pages: 391
Reading Level: YA
Book Rating: Photobucket
Goodreads Rating: 3.85
Published: March 5th, 2013

They have tried to squeeze us out, to stamp us into the past.

But we are still here.

And there are more of us every day.

Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has been transformed. The nascent rebellion that was under way in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight.

After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven—pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators now infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels, and as Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor.

Maybe we are driven crazy by our feelings.

Maybe love is a disease, and we would be better off without it.

But we have chosen a different road.

And in the end, that is the point of escaping the cure: We are free to choose.

We are even free to choose the wrong thing.

Requiem is told from both Lena’s and Hana’s points of view. The two girls live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.

Taschima's POV:

description

...there is another book right?

The DELIRIUM series cannot end this way, so vague and unfinished.

description

Disappointed doesn't begin to cover how I feel.

The beginning was slow, and the ending was rushed, sooo rushed... and unclear, and incomplete, and preachy, and not at all what I was expecting. It felt short, the whole book did.

So she went back to the wilds and lived crappily ever after? Is that what I am getting?

Felt like a bridge between books, nothing was really solved, and we were left with more questions than answers. While Pandemonium was a revelation, Requiem was the book that fell short. Guess it was too much to hope Requiem would be just as good. We get NO answers. At the end it's like nothing is resolved, not even the love triangle (that no one believed in the first place anyways).

I was already suspecting this was going to happen, when I reached the middle of the book (and a little after) and nothing significant had yet happened. We got a confrontation in the romance department (ONE! And not even after they meet face to face for the first time, woah was I pissed!), true, but other than that? Nada!!

This book was definitely dissapointing. We still get beautiful writing, and it was GREAT to get to see the characters we love again, but it felt like a bridge book. No resolution, no ENDING. Just, all left in the air...

description

The rest of this review shall be full of spoilers, so read if you must, I have a lot of talking to do about specific parts that pissed.me.off.

HIGHLIGHT space below for Spoilers.

By the end there she is with a child (Grace), reconciles with Alex (barely?) yet hasn't broken up with Julian even though she finally realized she will never love him as much as she loves Alex (DUH!)

Their reconciliation (Alex and Lena) wasn't even that romantic or sweet. It was business like. Oh yeah I love you, you love me, let's not even make eye contact as we are saying this in THE MIDDLE OF A FUCKING ATTACK.

Then Lena goes off, stares at Julian's bare chest on her way to a half pummeled wall (guess old habits die hard?) WITH A CHILD to help tear it down some more? WHAT THE HELL IS SHE GOING TO DO? ATTACK THE WALL WITH HER FISTS? SHE AIN'T FUCKING MADE OF STEEL! And the most ridiculous thing of all is the last paragraph where Lauren Oliver tries to tie everything with words of wisdom that quite frankly fell flat.

After everything we went through Delirium and Pandemonium do you really think a half assed paragraph was going to make me HAPPY? I am furious! The last paragraph could be summarized with the song by Avril Lavigne titled "Keep Holding on". Does this mean we get a sequel? To hold on for a brighter tomorrow in which the ending to one of my favorite series isn't this? I damn hope so.

And I haven't even started talking about Hana's grand finale.

She finds out there is a bomb at the house she is to live with her fucking psycho jerk of a husband and she just goes off the backdoor, never looking back. Did the husband explode? WHO KNOWS! Did Hana ever find Lena again? No fucking clue. What is she going to do now? Hell, you got me there!

And the way she does a complete 180 there at the end on the way she treats Lena and stuff after everything we have read from her POV? Nope, don't believe it. She treats Lena like she barely knows her even though she has been agonizing about her in every other page we read. Dumbfounding!

Is Hana's husband (the creepy psycho new mayor that quite possibly killed his father) even dead? No one knows! I didn't read about an explosion, how about you?

Oh and why doesn't Lena break up with Julian? My personal opinion is that Lauren Oliver dug herself a deep hole she doesn't want to get herself out of. Julian only joined the resistance because of Lena, only to find out this girl has been stringing him along this whole time?
Fuck, if she series were to continue Julian could become the ultimate super villain! He is smart, hot, from a well respected family, and has a bone to pick with love. Ultimate Super Villain. Couldn't blame the guy.

And Alex? Don't make me talk about him now, MY Alex died in Delirium. This new ball of hatred is not Alex. He is just not the guy any of us fell in love with, and you know why? BECAUSE HE DOESN'T GET ENOUGH PAGE TIME. If Hana could tell her story by GODS let Alex tell his side! All we get is confused old Lena who doesn't know her ass from her elbows.

I am sure our Alex never return because he never got a chance. So much time was put into veering us into the wrong conclusion of who was going to win Lena's heart that we didn't have enough reading space to fall in love with Alex all over again, hell we didn't even have time to reconnect!

Lena and her mother reunite. That was done right, I believe it. Lena is a big ball of feels, she would have forgiven her mother that easily. She never spoke top her about Alex though, in the entire book. You would think that small part of her live (the entire first book right?) would come up in conversation.

Coral, we hate her, we love her... I kind of liked her at the end. She seemed cool when not looked through Lena's eyes.

The war was never resolved. They won a battle (I think? They were definitely halfway through when the book ended...) in Portland, but they definitely didn't win any wars!

OH and after reading Raven's story, to find out she was pregnant (something that was NEVER referred to or addressed in Requiem) and she just DIES? Not even fighting or like the leader she is, she is climbing up some stairs, pokes her head out, and gets shot. Tack comes to console her, and we never read about them two again. Was the shot fatal? Maybe! Was she still pregnant by then? I don't know? Did Tack know? etc etc, nothing was addressed and everything was left up in the air.

Review: Lover at Last (The Black Dagger Brotherhood #11) by J.R.Ward

Qhuinn, son of no one, is used to being on his own. Disavowed from his bloodline, shunned by the aristocracy, he has finally found an identity as one of the most brutal fighters in the war against the Lessening Society. But his life is not complete. Even as the prospect of having a family of his own seems to be within reach, he is empty on the inside, his heart given to another....

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: The male has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young—just as Qhuinn has always wanted for himself. It’s hard to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. As he’s learned firsthand.

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.

Taschima's POV:

If you read this review, well, just know that there will be maybe some mild spoilers, but nothing too drastic. You have been warned, so no comments on how I should have warned you.

description

I think now I've had enough distance from the book (and the overly emotional response I would have posted if I had reviewed this book once I finished it) to coherently say to you guys how this book really was.

It was...

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

description

OMG I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT, Quinn, BLAY, Wrath, Beth, Layla, EVEN XCOR!! I just can't contain my emotions any longer. All the reviews I've read are either crusifying this book or putting it high up on a pedestal, and you know what I can understand both stands. While I mostly disagree with some of the critiques thrown at Lover at Last there are some things that bothered me about it which I shall discuss here. But... I am firmly in the "I HEARTS IT DEEPLY" camp. It was a good story that has been in development for 3-4 books now, and a story that is far from finished. I expect to see a lot more of Quinn/Blay in the near future.

Issue #1: Damn, the Warden is trying to suffocate us with subplots yo!

I agree, too many subplots, and if they had been about the brothers, or hell even about John Matthew, I would have been okay with it. Bring me MORE subplots I say. But, they were about new people, and I couldn't have given more of a crap about them. Assail and Sosa, while entertaining in their game of cat and mouse I really didn't see why I should care about them in this very second, same goes for Trez and Selena (we really didn't learn anything about Selena to make me root for the girl, she is just what you would expect a Chosen to be). I could have done without them, and more on the Brothers. Specially John Matthew! I thought I was going to get more of him SINCE Quinn and Blay are kind of his best friends, they are the three musketeers, but NOTHING! No reaction, no nothing. Disappointed about this. On the other hand I really enjoyed the sub plot involving the brotherhood/BOB/the Glymera. See? This is a sub plot that makes SENSE. It is connected not only to our boys but to the entire future of the fucking race. This sub plot I approve of, not the other two Trez/Selena and Assail/Sosa (I also approve of the Xcor/Layla sub plot).

On the upside she did give me some chapters of Wrath, so I guess I can forgive, but never forget. You owe me US John Matthew.

Issue #2: All about sex, none of the romance.

I would have to disagree. Sure there weren't any flowers or chocolates, and no one took anyone on a date, but there was tenderness between Quinn and Blay. You just got to understand that Blay is fucking pissed, so he might keep his heart locked under lock and key, and the whole book was about Quinn trying to slowly, but surely, get Blay to let him in again. There wasn't any looking at each others eyes during sex either, but come the fuck on, seriously? HOW? The sex was hot, and it is clear these two kids are crazy for each other. There will be more scenes with them in the future books, and maybe we will see even MORE "romance".

Issue #3: No lube?

Don't give a fuck. Not really, the brothers are notorious for finding their own ways to have tremendously over the top, man-that-is-going-to-hurt-in-the-morning, sex. If the Shellans are able to have sex again and again and again without some kind of lubrication for their poor vajaijais then I don't see how it needs to be any different for the boys. I am able to suspend my belief when it comes to this, because it is just so freaking hot.

Issue #4: Blay, is that you?

Yes, that is Blay, it is just another side of him. There were a lot of scenes of him being tender and compassionate, but there are also a lot of scenes of him being, again, pissed as hell because he has been down this road before and it never ended well. I found it kind of hot. Blay being the Alpha was definitely well deserved. At the end of the day however you can tell he is still a sweetheart at heart.

Issue #5: Layla pregnant.

A lot of people don't see the point of this Chosen being pregnant, but I do. It's a way for Quinn to have the family he always wanted. Blay, and his 'lil old kid. Quinn wants/needs a family, he always has. Don't know how that is going to work when Xcor joins the picture (awkward family dinners for sure...) but they will work it out and everybody will get what they wanted.

Overall sure there were some bumps along the way. It wasn't PERFECT (I could have done without some of the subplots and more of the brothers themselves) but I think Lover at Last marks a new style for J.R.Ward, as in she won't end everything with a pretty bow from now on like in past books. As many of you know the next book is titled The King (Holy CRAAAP YESSSSSSSS) which will feature Wrath and Beth as the main couple. This is the first time she has ever done this. It's a new age. It's not called Lover "place another word here" and it will feature an old couple. She will return to Quinn and Blay, they will have more scenes, and they shall truly solve their issues as time goes by. Lover at Last was 591 pages. It was a long ass book, and in those pages it managed to put the seeds for future books, and also to finally bring our favorite two boys together. Just as they should have been all along.

5 star, because even though it had some problems I still enjoyed it as if it it didn't have any issues at all.

Hot Cover Revealed: The Iron Traitor (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #2) by Julie Kagawa

Are you READY?!?!?!

...

..

.

The Iron Traitor (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten, #2)
He is staring right at me...

The cover looks absolutely kick ass, following the traditional format of all the Iron Fey covers. This one is way more icy. Makes you wonder if your fingers will get cold just from holding it. The cover is of, of course, Kierran, the son of Meghan and Ash. Doesn't Kierran look a little old to you? I guess I was expecting someone younger looking since, well, he is supposed to be a teen, right? But whatevs, this hot 20 something eye candy will do in a pinch.

And I am not the only one enjoying this fey-tastic cover either, here is Julie Kagawa's take on it:
""When I saw this cover, I about fell off my chair from how perfect it is for the story. This is Ethan’s story, but it’s Keirran who is the catalyst for everything, and having him front and center is exactly what I hoped for."

I am happy Julie, and us, got what we wanted. I want October to get here NOW!
